I volunteered as an AI researcher for a joint project by Kakao and Modu Research Institute, where we built a lightweight eye-tracking model to help detect cataracts. Using a ViT-based architecture, we hit over 90% accuracy. I also designed a custom AI model that could accurately detect the eye region, and optimized it with ONNX so it could run smoothly on Android—even without Wi-Fi, and with barely any battery drain. We ended up launching it as a mobile app!
It’s still one of the most meaningful projects I’ve ever been part of—not because of any reward, but because we built something that could actually help people. I was lucky to work with such an inspiring team, and I’ll never forget how exciting it felt to build something real and impactful together. Creating tech that makes a difference is what truly makes me happy, and I hope to keep growing as an engineer who can keep doing just that.
